Job Details Magento Frontend Developer

Stay hungry, stay foolish
Steve Jobs

Hello,

My name is Si and I lead the Frontend Development team at GENE,

I’m looking for a Frontend developer to come and join my team. This might be you!

But first, let me tell you about GENE.

We are an ecommerce agency with a healthy obsession: Make Ecommerce Better.

We believe that better customer experiences lead to better results for our clients, which leads to better work for our people and better technology for the industry.

We develop on the Magento platform and work with a modified form of agile designed for agencies. Here, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team of designers, developers, strategists and excellent project managers.

Who are we looking for?

A good Frontend Developer has good technical knowledge. But they also have the empathy to develop a satisfying user experience which has people coming back again and again.

In the modern world of Frontend Development, you need to have both skills.

This combination makes Frontend Developers of great strategic importance to our development projects. As a result, they often serve as the bridge between strategists and designers on one hand, and back-end developers and DevOps on the other.

This is also why I expect great front-enders to be compelling communicators, great team players and adaptable to situations.

Lastly, given the pace of innovation and evolution of front-end technologies, front-end developers need to be avid learners, always willing to reinvent themselves and their approach.

Having said that, we need to keep in mind that we’re solving problems for human needs and that these don’t change that much. This is why new technologies are great when they serve a purpose, but new for new’s sake it’s a sure way to failure.

Besides experience with the Magento platform, I also expect you to have the below skills. However, don’t despair if you are missing something from the above. It’s OK if you are willing to learn!

  • Awesome HTML5, CSS3
  • Responsive design and development experience
  • Sass, less and gulp
  • Robust JavaScript skill-set; increasing experience with ReactJS / Vue.js
  • Understanding of PHP
  • Working knowledge of asset extraction and the ability to advise on new approaches such as material design.
  • Experience in an Agile development environment
  • GIT version control
  • Experience in the full development life-cycle from planning to coding to delivery

Why do I think you will love it here?

People love it here. Yes, we work hard and we face big challenges but our teams are happy and productive.

We anonymously survey everyone every six months and the company publishes the results openly. This is how we ensure our people are happy and we understand the problems we face.

One thing I really like about GENE is that we care a lot more about the daily experience of our people than about superfluous “perks” like ping pong tables (but of course, we have one of those too, and ping pong skills are welcome too!)

Good work needs great culture. To achieve this, we genuinely listen and involve everyone to make decisions on how we work and how the company runs.

Some examples?

GENEfest (a two-day hackathon meets festival in our Brighton HQ), No-meeting Wednesdays, Pizza Wednesdays (anyone in the office gets treated to lunch) and our Work Where (and When) You Work Best approach to the workplace where all initiatives that came from our people.

I joined last year, and it’s been awesome. We have an amazing front-end team and we’re surrounded by great back-enders, designers, project managers, data scientists and strategists.
